Welcome to Hellbender Steelworks!
Hi there! I'm John, and I'm thrilled to share a bit about myself and what I do. My passion for crafting knives began as a hobby years ago after my wife suggested we take a class with Will from Heartwood Forge, and it has since become a deep passion.
Living amongst the hills of East Tennessee provides inspiration and materials for my craft. I love incorporating materials that I source locally (steels and handle material) to give each piece it's own story.
Whether it’s a piece of wood I’ve harvested from a downed tree on my family’s land or an old rasp that once belonged to a friend’s grandfather, each knife I make carries a part of me. Like the Hellbender salamander, a unique creature native to the streams of this region and a symbol of fire in many cultures, every knife is one-of-a-kind and reflects the strength and beauty of the natural world that inspires it.

But I don't do this alone. Alongside me in the workshop are my trusty companions, Storm (In loving memory April 6, 2026), Remi, and Grizz, our loyal dogs... but they're not just pets- they're valued members of the team! Whether they're keeping me company during long hours at the forge or lending a paw with quality control, their presence makes every day in the workshop brighter.
When I'm not crafting knives, you'll often find me strumming on my banjo or playing a tune on the fiddle. Music is another passion of mine, and it's deeply ingrained in the culture of East Tennessee. It's not uncommon for the workshop to resonate with the sounds of folk melodies and fiddle tunes as I work.
Outside of music and crafting knives, I cherish spending time with my wonderful wife, Sarah. She's my biggest supporter and source of inspiration, always encouraging me to push the boundaries of my creativity. Together, we enjoy exploring the beauty of East Tennessee, whether it's mountain biking in the surrounding hills, hiking along the Appalachian trail, or simply relaxing on our porch with a cup of coffee.
We believe in more than just creating exceptional blades; we're dedicated to fostering a sense of community and craftsmanship. Each knife that leaves our workshop is not just a tool but a testament to our commitment to quality, integrity, and handmade craftsmanship.
Thank you for joining us on this journey. We're honored to share our passions with you.
Warm regards,
John
