Bird's Eye gets its name from the bird shape on the front right handle piece- thanks to my neighbor Bill for spotting it! The bird’s face is outlined by the black spalting veins and faces left, with the front right pin forming its eye. The spalted maple on the front handle was chosen for its natural mimicry of the Damascus blade’s intricate patterns, created through the forge-welding of multiple steel layers at extreme temperatures (1500-2000°F). Spalting is actually the result of a fungus creating the black veins through the wood, but don't worry, the wood has been specially treated in a process called stabilization which eliminates any live fungus. This process makes the handle water-resistant, rot-resistant, and durable. To complement the bird-eye motif, the rear handle is crafted from Thuya burl, a rare wood from Morocco’s Atlas Mountains. Known for its rich cedar-like fragrance and eye-like spots, Thuya burl has been treasured for centuries and is even mentioned in the Bible (Revelation 18:12). Both woods have been meticulously hand-sanded to a smooth, buttery finish, ensuring this knife is as comfortable to use as it is visually striking, making it perfect for everyday kitchen tasks.
